Eastern Lincoln County features North Carolina's largest lake, Lake Norman. It has 520 miles of shoreline and 32,000 acres of surface area. Western Lincoln County features rural farm lands near South Mountain State Park offering horseback riding, hiking, hunting and much more.
Lincolnton was established in 1785 as the seat of Lincoln County. Thanks to the steady flow of pioneers relocating to North Carolina's backcountry, by 1840 Lincoln County had become one of the most populous counties in North Carolina.

It led the state in the value of wheat,
orchard products and dairy products and was among the top producers of cotton and livestock in North Carolina as well. By 1849, it was also the top producer of iron in the state due to the county's many forges and furnaces. However, the creation of 3 new counties out of Lincoln County lands during the 1840s managed to slow the county's development. It wasn't until the start of the 20th century that growth in and around Lincolnton once again took off with the arrival of numerous textile mills.

Lincolnton offers its share of local annual
events, too. Aside from the Apple Festival held each fall, we also host a
regular Christmas parade and the "Alive After Five" concert series in the
summertime.
13 public schools and 2 private schools offer education to local students. Higher education is provided most closely by Gaston College just 10 miles away. Alternatives within 35 miles of town include Catawba Valley Community College, Davidson College,Gardner-Webb University, Winthrop University, Central Piedmont Community College and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Gaston Memorial Hospital, Catawba Valley Medical Center and Kings Mountain Hospital Inc. all serve the area's health care needs from about 15 miles outside of town.
The majestic South Mountains stand to the west, providing skiing and hiking to adventurous souls. Those who prefer their outdoor explorations a bit wetter can boat or fish on the Catawba River and nearby Lake Norman, the largest body of water in the state. Striper, crappie, white perch and largemouth bass are among the species that anglers can attempt to reel in. Numerous game lands provide hunting opportunities around Lincolnton.
